Ancient Issa, with its regular layout of streets, is the oldest urban core in this area. <\/p><p>In the 7th and 8th centuries, Croats settled on Vis, merging with the natives of Illyrian, Greek and Roman origin and <strong>Croatizing the name of the island to Vis<\/strong> , which was mentioned by the Byzantine emperor in his work <em><strong>De administrando imperio<\/strong><\/em> (On \u200b\u200bthe Administration of the Empire) at the beginning of the 10th century.    <strong>Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus. <\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-dc6fa71 elementor-section-content-middle elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"dc6fa71\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\" id=\"milna\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-no\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-7fa9b4d\" data-id=\"7fa9b4d\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3ada971 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3ada971\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_animation&quot;:&quot;none&quot;}\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Since <b>the 18th century,<\/b> Vis has been ruled by <b>the Italians, the French, the English and the Habsburg Monarchy.<\/b> The English confirmed their presence on Vis when they defeated the navy of the island&#8217;s then ruler, Napoleon, in the Battle of Vis in 1811. After their victory, they became the island&#8217;s administrators, built a series of forts and introduced a cadastre.  <\/p><p><b>The 20th century<\/b> was also turbulent on Vis. After <strong>World War I,<\/strong> Vis was under Italian rule, and then under the rule <b>of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia<\/b> . The Italians reoccupied Vis in 1941, but soon abandoned it after the capitulation. In October 1943, the entire island came under the rule <b>of the Yugoslav partisans.<\/b> There was also an Allied airfield on it, which served as a base for attacks on areas under German occupation. Even in <b>socialist Yugoslavia<\/b> , Vis remained <b>a military base<\/b> and was closed to tourists for decades.
